Different types of wine


Every wine is made up of grapes; however, wines can be categorized in two types on the basis of the grape color chosen for preparing them. Red wines are those which are produced from red or black grapes and white wine are those which are produced by using white grapes.

There are hundreds of varieties of red or black grapes and white grapes. Different varieties of these grapes can be used to produce different wines and that is why we enjoy such a large range of varieties at wine shops. Consumers generally recognize the wines with names given to the different varieties of grapes that are used to produce them. The quality and variety of grapes is the deciding factor for the taste of the wine.

Red wine types:

Cabernet sauvignon is one of the most popular red wines. Wine connoisseurs will suggest that the best quality of Cabernet sauvignon types of wine are produced from the grapes grown in the Bordeaux region of France. Another popular wine is Merlot which is famous for its chocolate and cherry flavors. Grapes with a raspberry and smoky flavor are used to produce Grenache which is another popular red wine. The Burgundy region of France is well known for the cultivation of Pinot Noir which is a red wine and is very difficult to produce. Its peculiarity is the taste which resembles with mint, black cherries and raspberries. Zinfandel is basically a European wine which is produced mostly in California in current times.

All of these are red types of wine and they are often served with red meat or heavier meals.

White type of wines is preferred to be served with white meat and light meals and these wines are produced from different varieties of white grapes. The most popular white types of wine are Chardonnays. Chardonnay is peculiar for its fruity taste amalgamated with taste of vanilla. Chenin Blancs is another white type of wine which is mainly produced in California. The grapes used to produce Chenin Blancs are cheaper alternative to Chardonnay and they also offer similar fruity taste.

Another white wine which is also compared with the royal taste of Chardonnays is Pinot Blanc which offers tastes of apple and spice. Pinot Gris on the other hand, offers rich spice flavor. It is mostly produced in Oregon. Another popular white wine is Riesling which is predominantly produced in Germany and it offers fruity taste when you drink it. If you are looking for a cheaper and tasty wine with peachy flavor, you may opt for Semillon, and if you are looking for a sweet wine, opt for Californian white Zinfandel. Red Zinfandel grapes are processed and their skins are removed to produce pinkish white Zinfandel wine.

In general, white wines are preferred with white meats and light meals. However, it is certainly up to your own taste to choose the types of wine to be served at a dinner party.
